Fireplaces

In our previous home, we had a fireplace that was wood-burning.  My husband LOVES having a fire going in the winter… I do not, at least inside.  For wood-burning fireplaces I hate that they stink up the whole house, my hair and all of my clothes.  If it’s outside and at a campfire- great!  But inside, it’s the equivalent of cigarette smoke to me, I don’t like it.  So, in our old house we never had a burning fire.  Sorry BB!

The model house in our neighborhood does not have a fireplace, so initially I wasn’t sure if they even offered them… silly me!  Of course they do… for an added cost.  I think Ryan Homes will do so much stuff… for an added cost.  Want that window - $500!  Want that morning room - $12,000!  But I digress…

Once we found out we could do a fireplace in the Rome on the back wall of the family room or the side room, we had to decide on the placement and the type.  Thankfully, Ryan Homes only offers gas fireplaces.  I love gas fireplaces – all of the ambiance without the terrible smell!  It’s a win-win for our household.

Fireplace Options

·         Slate surround = $3,095

·         Granite surround = $3,395

·         Stone = $5,595
 Stacked Stone

Round Stone

Now, fireplaces are my husband’s thing.  Because I won the white kitchen battle (my hubby wasn’t a huge fan), I compromised and let him have whatever fireplace he wanted.  I would have been good with the Slate or Granite surround, but BB  opted for the stone fireplace with the PA Sierra Fieldstone.  I think it’s going to look fantastic, very grand in the living room!

For the placement, we opted to have it on the side wall so you can see it really well when you’re in the kitchen.  We also didn’t want to take up space where either the deck or patio will go if it were placed on the back wall of the family room.

Did you opt for a fireplace?  Do you hate that wood-burning smell inside your house, or am I just a weirdo?

  1. Hi there! We did opt for the fireplace. Surely more me than my hubby! I love a fireplace...the heat, the ambiance...just great! HAHAHA! My hubby could care less but since I was able to get, it was on my list of needs.
We were all about living in lofts before moving here so I was blessed to live with fireplace options. I will say that wood is a lot more work and the smell could be turn-off. Gas was the way to go for me as well!
You fireplace is going to be dynamic! Very nice choice! I love what you all have decided upon and I can only imagine the finished look of that space. "Grand" is very fitting! :-)

  3. I thought we were Bucks County? Lol. I know we took a picture of it. We're both fireplace people and in our opinion, the stone is the only way to go. The others with just the white mantle look way too "weak", especially at that price point. We put our in the same location for the same reasons you did.

    1. That's crazy that the stone fireplace is $1,500 more for ya'll! I wonder why the difference, a lot of other upgrade items seem to be pretty similar in cost.

    2. Initially when we first looked at Ryan it was $6000, then a few months later it was raised to $7g. I don't think it's that the actually fireplace cost got higher, I think it was there way of sneaking in extra profit without raising the base price so they can still advertise their "low" intro rate. It's a very sharp looking fireplace and I'm sure they did enough market research to know they could jack it up a bit and people (such as us) will still want it and pay for it.
